Second Annual Student Ethnographic Film Festival

Second Annual Student Ethnographic Film Festival

As part of an ongoing project on visual methodologies, we present videos from students at Leuphana University exploring film and art as research methods

An introduction will be given by Justin Malachowski, postdoctoral scholar for the Institute of Sociology and Cultural Organization at Leuphana University.

This year’s collection of short ethnographic films invites viewers to consider, through nuance and reflection, some of the communities, histories, and environments that give meaning and context to everyday interactions and experience. Highlighting Luneburg, the surrounding regions, and some foreign-yet-familiar places, the films offer glimpses into unexpected places: the lives of performance artists, the nostalgia for the promise of a future that never came, a community estranged from their nation but still at home, and the calming serenity sought through the sensation of nature. With around 8 films at around 10 minutes each, screening will be followed by short discussion with the film makers on the use of film and creative methods as a research methodology.
